From the prime age of 2, I was attending weekly classes and preparing for my Olympic debut.
…I’m actually still prepping for it.
In all seriousness, gymnastics (along with hockey and mixed martial arts) is one of my all-time favorite sports. Arguably the most physically demanding and challenging competition, I try to incorporate gymnastic principles in all training programs for myself as well as my clients.
Unfortunately, many powerlifter’s don’t apprecaite the benefits gymnastics have to offer.
To put an end to this ridiculousness (yea, it’s a word) and show lifters of all disciplines that bodyweight training holds a very important role within our programming, I’m going to conquer the handstand and other gymnastic-based movements while simultaneously improving strength in the squat, bench press, and deadlift.
To kick start this series with a bang, below is a video of myself performing my first [recorded] handstand. Obviously this wasn’t the first handstand I’ve ever done, but I have a lot of room for improvement and look forward to sharing my progress with you.
Gymnastics for Powerlifters: My Quest to Conquer the Handstand
